About Me

I have over thirty years experience as a freelance video director and editor in Australia and make a wide range of video programs for government, corporate clients and not for profit organisations.

Laura

I recently retired from working part-time as a Videographer for Australia for UNHCR, who have been a lovely client for about 16 years. I make videos for campaigns and to inform our regular donors. In March 2016, we visited Kakuma Refugee Camp in Kenya, near the Sudan border, to see the benefits of UNHCR’s work in the region.

I recently directed and edited a documentary for the Blue Mountains Rural Fire Service and National Parks called “Fire Stories: Living With Risk” to prod residents of the lower mountains to be more prepared for both the disaster of bushfire, but also the difficulty of recovery. The residents of Winmalee tell the story of the 2013 fire, which destroyed 200 houses. Their first hand accounts include eyewitness videos and photos taken by residents and fire fighters. It was shown at The Hub in Springwood in August 2018.

Five years ago, I directed and edited “Fire Stories: Lessons in Time” about the Leura bushfire of 1957. Screened at the Edge Cinema in Katoomba and Glenbrook Cinema, the film was seen by over 10,000 people and was used to raise awareness of the need to prepare for the coming bushfire season. The film was very successful in changing people’s perceptions and behaviour.

I have worked to explain many different topics, whether it’s showcasing the New Zealand biotech industry, exploring health problems in remote Aboriginal communities, explaining cancer treatments for Roche or describing industry best practise in the pork industry.

When I used to work for Film Australia, I directed and edited many productions, including the workings of the Snowy Hydro Scheme for their visitors centre in Cooma and even changes to superannuation law.

I have a strong track record in training as well. When working for Three Bears Media, I directed a series of Careers Education CD ROMs for the Education Department and the Australian Industry Group, shooting “Day in the Life Of” stories about Qantas maintenance mechanics, fine furniture makers, boat builders, food technologists and mining engineers, to name just a few. I have made DVDs on best OH&S practice in industry and community care.

I’ve also made highly successful training DVDs for UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, to train their local teams of fundraisers.

Clients also appreciate my strong interest in environmental topics since my early days of bushwalking. My degree in Environmental Science from the University of Tasmania helps me to understand current issues. I have edited stories on cutting edge research in Methane Production projects in Fiji and ground water poisoning in Bangladesh. I am actively involved in the Wolli Creek Preservation Society in inner southwest Sydney, reporting for and editing their quarterly newsletter.

As an editor, I also make documentaries for television. I edited a long-term project recording the oral histories of past members of the Australian SAS about their experiences in various conflicts and discussing SAS mindset and strategy.

I edited a ten part television series about international sculptor Andrew Rogers called ‘Monumental Vision’. Made for the Discovery HD Channel, this series followed Rogers as he enlisted the help of local people to help make his ambitious large-scale earth art on every continent of the world. I recently completed a further series called Mega Art, set in Turkey, Kenya and Antarctica.
