Fire Stories: Living With Risk

Working with the Blue Mountains World Heritage Institute, I directed and edited this one hour documentary for the Blue Mountains Rural Fire Service and National Parks. We told the story of the catastrophic 2013 bushfire in the lower Blue Mountains where 200 houses were destroyed, but no lives lost. It’s a cautionary tale for people living in bushfire prone areas, told by those who survived the fire and using eyewitness video and pictures.

People need to be much better prepared for bushfires as climate change takes hold and weather conditions become more extreme. They need to prepare not only for the risk of a fire but also for the aftermath and recovery, which may be several years. In August 2018, we showed the film to residents at the Hub in Springwood in an afternoon of free screenings.
